Your Biz Multiplier Inside!

Key function in any business.

Good evening and happy Monday to you liberated human, lovely Nick’s letters reader and subscriber.

I’d be happy not sending you this letter and instead stand out to watch the Redhill’s sun go down. But because I want more happiness, more than the happiness of not working on the most dreaded day of the week(Monday), I will go ahead and write to you. This must be issue number 70-something and today I hope to keep it below 500 words.

Last week, a fellow digital marketer was telling me about how he approached and pitched to a retail business here in Kiambu county only to be rejected. It is not the rejection part that got me interested, it is the reason given for that rejection.

As he said to me, or according to how I understood him, the business representative said they needed not to be online since their offline customers were enough for them! We laughed so hard even after I asked him if he could persuade them further or look for the owner instead of the representative- the store manager I guess! And as we left to enter a heavy party mode that lasted for more than a weekend, I concluded that Biz owners are actually clueless of the fact that marketing is a key function in any business.

BIG marketing minds like Ogilvy Vice chair Rory Sutherland already agree that marketing is a multiplier to business. Meaning that if you want to see measurable and sometimes magical growth in business, simply invest in marketing! I think this is just common sense since marketing brings you more people. Even NGOs which are always not profit driven invest in marketing to amplify their reach. Yet many people, in this case Biz owners, just never see it!

Early in my digital marketing career, as an intern, I was part of a very small team that brought in KES250,000 business to a Nairobi based textile company. And that was after about 6 weeks of digital marketing efforts on Facebook and Instagram. This proved to me early on that digital marketing is essential for businesses whether they think they need it or not!

The sun has probably already set but I am happy to deliver this week’s letter. To help you see the need for digital marketing, my article on Substack is so insightful. I talk about the need for digital marketing and facts most biz owners may not know. So if you run a business, this one's for you regardless of already having digital marketing in your biz.

And as a sexy Nick’s letters reader, you are a biz yourself. I guarantee you’re gonna learn something to help you sell yourself to more people.

Until next week.

-Nick Osale.
