Yo how do we read?
'Nick, honestly, I don’t know how to read."
Happy Monday, fam, and a big welcome to our new subscribers! Let’s dive right in.
A few weeks ago, after sharing a snapshot of a book I was reading, I received a reply from an esteemed follower that caught me off guard. It was a bit of a rare reply in form of a question. I call it a rare question because I didn’t expect something like that from someone like him.
You see, he’s a university graduate working in the climate change space—someone you'd assume wouldn’t face this particular challenge. But I was wrong.
He asked me how he could start reading books.
I was stunned for a moment. How was that even possible?
He said something like, “Nick, honestly, I don’t know how to read except for maybe the weekly blogs by Biko Zulu.”
Then he went to plead how reading a book like mastery by Robert green was an uphill task for him.
That’s when it hit me. The real pandemic isn’t COVID—no, COVID was just a scam compared to this! The real pandemic is people’s inability to read books.
But guess what? From my years of reading experience, I’ve got the medicine for this. And not only for him, but for anyone else struggling to read and extract valuable lessons from books. Of course, sometimes I send you letters with inspiration from books I have read. But I still encourage you to be people who read books. It will really benefit you in ways you never knew.
When I first fell in love with reading as a uni freshman, I learned something early on—though I can't quite remember how I figured it out. And my lesson was this: If you want to learn the most valuable lessons and ideas of the world, books are your answer.
Do you want to master work politics? read a book/
Do you want to learn how to navigate a dark time in life? read a book.
Wanna learn a new skill? read a book.
Books have all the answers to our questions. Only if we read them!
Of course, these days many people claim that the current generation of Gen Z do not read. Ati they prefer watching videos. Well let them not read. But if you are reading this, be among the rare who read. If you are the person thinking like that, I want to tell you that the bible was not recorded by holy spirit-inspired men as a video but as a book. On top of that, great ancient philosophers like Friedrich Nieztsche did not record videos. Even though the old and classic ideas are available to us today on the internet in form of videos, the original thought form of man is in written form. So, it only helps to read than to listen and watch.
Anyway, it doesn’t matter what type of book you're reading. What matters is that there's always a lesson to extract. Simply reading blogs and articles is like stepping into a boxing ring with one hand tied behind your back. You’re going to get knocked out!
But look at the story of my buddy. Despite his impressive academic and marital achievements, he didn’t know how to read and extract original knowledge from books. And that’s why I say it without hesitation—this inability to read is a pandemic. But there’s good news: everyone reading this email is either free from that virus or about to be cured.
That brings me to my new offer for the week:
