The Critic of Generative AI.
And so, Ai my arse.
Not long ago I was talking to my friend, subscriber and supporter of the Nick Letters, Shivaci Shihembekho
After philosophizing on some Chopra philosophy, the chat somehow turned into asking questions to ChatGpt and Grok then critiquing those answers to see if they were legit.
It was interesting. Oh by the way, when I say generative AI, I am talking about the type of AI that generates text, images and other media. With generative Ai, most people have come to believe that they have found a savior to write or design things for them. People nowadays have become so lazy and put a few prompts in Chatgpt then expect the intelligence to for example write for them a blog, an email or a couple of social media posts. Or even think for them and tell them what to do. And it is from this type of behavior we see generic and cold messages all over the internet from people and businesses who simply refuse to think for themselves thus affecting themselves and their internet based businesses.
We even have hot debates on how AI is going to replace professions with the most threatened professionals being writers and designers. (I am one of them) On a personal note, from the day I heard about Chatgpt and how it was quickly replacing writers, I knew that something was amiss about the whole statement of AI replacing writers. Because, how can something that was created and powered by people replace people? In my opinion, if you think Ai can replace your profession, especially something like chatgpt, then you are a below average thinker. Luckily, you are not because you are reading this email!
Anyway, I told chat gpt to name a song for me in which American rapper and entrepreneur NAsir Jones aka Nas mentioned a guy called Deepak Chopra. If you are anything like me, you love Nas and his music plus the work he is doing in the entertainment world. You also find the work of chopra behooving. Now guess what these AI did?
Of course you don't have to guess because I am going to tell you.
I am one of those guys who have listened to the entire album collection of Nas and even a whole lot of his singles both hit songs and underground tunes. And I knew really that Nas had mentioned Chopra. My friend Shivaci even knew the exact song. But when we both asked Ai, chatGtp and Grok both got it wrong, outrightly.
From what my friend knew, it was in a song called fever. A track from his 2023 album. That is where Nas mentioned Deepak Chopra. But not only did my chatgpt miss the name of the song, but it also missed the name of the album and the year as well.
My friend Shivaci, who I like to think can match and even surpass my knowledge of NAsir's music, was there with me and he also did the same exercise using another generative Ai called Grok. And you are right, Grok was also off the answers with each and every response but had clever ways of accepting I got it off guard by asking sweet questions back in the prompt responses.
The exercise was intense and the chat lengthened as we exchanged more ideas, prompts and responses. We concluded that Ai was trained by humans and so the answers you get from AI are always never nailed even if the smartest person trained it.
And do not get me wrong, AI is not even a bad thing. Because generative Ai can excel in writing technical stuff and help you map out more ideas from a single. In the digital marketing world where I am now an infant accepted as a copywriter and strategist, many people use Ai for brainstorming.
Anyway, when it comes to giving information, I feel you need to be very knowledgeable in a topic and be able to critique what Ai gives you. People say that AI can reason faster and better than humans, which I think is true. But what about the information it spews out? More than once I have been able to pin down chatgpt for giving me absolute BS and it even accepted that it was wrong. Simply because I knew exactly what I was looking for and all that it did was guess and give info that looked outrightly fake.
And so for me, the biggest critique to AI is that everything it gives you is a big joke if you are smart enough to see.
If you are like the broke content creator who cannot hire a copywriter or the lazy CEO who thinks Ai will create marketing materials for them, then you will likely be doomed into generic content that will never speak to your people. A bad condition for digital brands if you asked me!
The answer to this AI menace…
It is of course to be found in listening to what your business is telling you and not relying on AI to write or design for you. Or even letting it tell you what to do with your business.
As an infant internet marketer, I have been in places when I had to use AI in marketing strategies and content creation and it often felt like cheating for me. Most recently, I created a blogging strategy and a whole 31 blog posts for my first big local client. Of course, they wanted me to use AI so I had the option to do it. And it was so easy I felt like cheating. But the client loved the work so not a problem for me to be honest.
We are living in the information age so if you rely heavily on Artificial intelligence without using your human intelligence, you might just find yourself equipped with stale or fake content that will eventually affect the growth and perception of your brand and business even without yourself knowing. And so Ai my arse, that's my short critique of generative AI.
