I watched Jordan Peterson Talk About Writing and This is What he Said.
I am not a die hard fan of Jordan Peterson but...
I am not a die hard fan of Jordan Peterson but I like the way he talks and presents his arguments.
Jordan Peterson is a Canadian psychologist, a writer, a public intellectual and a former professor at the university of Toronto and Harvard. He is loved and revered by men and women for his intellectual capabilities and deep thinking and most importantly nuggets of wisdom and encouragement which is surely short in society.
He has given a lot of talks and published several books. I admit I haven't read any of his books from start to end. And I haven't even listened to more than a dozen of his online lectures.
But the less than 5 minute talks he gave on writing to university students are what I am going to write about in today's email. You are going to see how powerful the act of writing is so that you too can learn and reap the fruits of writing.
My previous email said that writing frees the world.
And is there a better follow up to that email than this? Because writing is a skill that can make you become a free (free is a big word but let us use it anyway!) human being just like Jordan himself.
So after watching and listening to this video for about 20 times, here are 7 nuggets of wisdom that I consider helpful to you my dear liberated reader and subscriber .
It's like… there is a conspiracy to bring people into the education system to make them weaker.
These days, it is very easy to make it to university. But universities don't teach people how to write. I am talking about schools under the colleges or departments of Social sciences and humanities. All these schools do is care about giving grades so that more students can keep coming for those grades.
There is no difference between writing and thinking.
It is not the first time I have made this relation about writing and thinking. Because really, writing stimulates your brain to think in order to generate the words, sentences and structure the paragraphs to make sense.
Thinking makes you act effectively in the world. It makes you win the battles you undertake.
Since we have already established that there is no difference between writing and thinking, writing is a good practice of becoming an effective and reliable human being.
Writing is like the most powerful weapon you can provide someone with.
He compares writing and articulating your thoughts to having a sword. An M16 and a bullet proof vest. You can literally kill someone and defend yourself as well if you know how to write and form great arguments.
If you are an effective writer or speaker, you have all the authority and competence there is.
What is it about writing that can make you an authority and competent in your industry? Thinking, I guess!
Get your words together man, it makes you unstoppable.
We said that writing is the foundation of media and technology. There is a whole world on the internet waiting for you to conquer. That can only be done when you know how to write. Things like blogs, podcasts, reels and youtube videos are based on written scripts. Words have power.
Writing brings you influence, opportunities and money.
And that is what everybody wants in society. Don't you?
If you want to be good at critical thinking, teach yourself how to write.
That point is self explanatory and brings us to the conclusion of today's letter.
Conclusion.
Jordan Peterson seems to me the person living the ideal life of someone who knows how to write. In that he has published several books, he is famous, he is rich, he is articulate and he is influencing many by helping men and women become better people.
And so, writing will eventually improve your thinking, and your actions in the world.
It will bring you the goodness of life because many people including those in universities do not know how to write and act effectively in the world.
The 8 points we have discussed today alone are meant to show you how powerful writing is. Remember one, two or all these lines and act on them.
You can write for yourself, or you can work closely with a professional writer like me here. If you need a writer, reply to this email. What are you waiting for? THE END.
P.S
