The Dark Arts Of Marketing And Advertising.
But are we really doomed?
Hello, my friend.
Today we have an interesting topic.
I am sitting at my desk after waking up and getting straight to work. I didn't have to go outside or do any of the common morning routines except drinking a glass of water. And that's still OK. Don't sweat!
Now. I want to tell you a fact about this powerful career called marketing. And it's this:
Advertising and marketing are dark arts.
Yes, you heard me right.
You see, marketing and advertising were originally meant to show people light and help them improve their daily decisions. But along the way something changed.
Let me use a story about an American writer called Edward Bernays. Through his advertisements, he convinced American women to start smoking cigarettes. With his persuasive abilities and deep knowledge of the human mind, he made history after getting women to do something they had never done in previous times. Apart from that, I also watched an ad that was encouraging women to wear really high-heeled shoes and avoid the worry of pain on their heels by applying an ointment painkiller. Wow! Look good and feel good, right?
Anyway, why am I saying marketing and advertising are dark arts? It is because these days the mass mainstream media is taking advantage of human ignorance and showing you things that break you instead of things that make you. And its not just the mass media, small marketing agencies and marketers are aware and doing this to people. More and more marketers these days are putting profits first over positive impact. However, there's some good news. As you may know it, there's a universal law of dark and light. Good and evil. Hot and cold. We can apply this law to marketing by choosing the light over darkness. Marketing and advertising are still tools to help people and make them take the right decisions. To help them head in the right direction. Unfortunately, it is the opposite for many many mainstream marketers and advertisers. Now there are you and me, who are willing to use marketing for the good of people.
Back at our Bernays example… without a doubt, we know how much cigarettes can be damaging especially to women who are considered to be the womb of the world. What then happens if we attack the supposed womb of the world?
My message to you this Monday morning is this. Marketing is very powerful. Learn to watch out for misleading and outrightly evil marketing. And if you're a business owner or a marketing executive, lean into reality or use false logic to give your people the light they deserve. Don't just market for profits. Market and advertise for positive impact and the profits shall come. Doing this is gonna go a long way toward healing the destitute of the world and healing the burning soul of the world. Or simply put, make the world a better place.
