Become An Automatic Digital Writer By Following These 3 Dead Simple Steps.

Simple like ABC yet unknown to many beginner writers.

The time now is 6.03 AM. I woke up with an already made-up mind. To sit down and begin automatic writing. What is automatic writing? You are going to know that in a few.

Today as promised, let us return to the art of writing. Let us see how you can build a daily writing habit so that you set yourself up for a passionate writing career and enjoy yourself.

Now.

Writing is a habit just like brushing your teeth in the morning.

So let me ask you this. Do you normally need a reminder to go to the sink and brush your teeth? I bet not.

Why? Because you always do it automatically. The same can happen with writing. It can get to a point after many years of practice when writing becomes nearly automatic to you. And that is when the habit has been solidified to the level you don’t even sweat to do it… Automatic writing, isn’t it? That is what I am going to write to you about in this letter: How to become an automatic writer.

You know what my friend?

Back at the beginning of the year that was 2020, I returned again to writing after taking a long break. I blamed myself to be suffering from what is commonly called writer’s block. I had gone around 3 years without publishing or writing anything.

I never kept a journal like I do these days.

I never posted on my then blog because I just couldn’t.

It felt so hard for me and my mind to actually write.

Then came the covid lockdown.

I was living in a big apartment with my brothers enjoying bad habits and having fun every day. The only productive thing I feel I was doing at that time was reading a lot of books and articles. And taking some online courses. But I had mad trouble writing…

However, I managed to return.

How did I do it?

I started with something called journaling…. What is journaling?

See it this way.

Journalling is like becoming your own news reporter. Reporting your own daily news to yourself through writing. Now when I started, it was obviously hard for me. The daily ideas and stories didn’t connect a lot. They didn’t even come out as I wished. Yes, I used to have ideas, but it felt so hard to put them well on paper. Writing had become so hard for me and the reason?

I had not developed the daily habit to write.

Anyway.

Today, I am happy to report that writing has been cemented into my mind as a habit. Something I no longer struggle a lot with. On top of that, writing is the base skill in my new career of marketing for small businesses. You too can speed up your process of learning by following 3 simple steps that I am going to tell you. This can set you up for earning from writing.

Now, when it comes to making money as a writer, what most people think when they hear that is probably academic writing. Or writing articles for writing job brokers. Or writing and selling your novel or collection of poems.

Sure. Those are great ways to earn as a writer. But I have already told you about the rarely-heard-about writing career where you earn to think. Read about it here. And I have told you about my current self-education course in a writing skill called business-to-business copywriting. I am going to remind you again…

Business-to-business copywriting is helping and enabling communications and transactions between two companies. It is basically sales in written form. This one writing skill is much more rewarding than writing fiction or poetry. I know I may be biased.

And don’t get me wrong. Poetry and fiction can still pay you. But we are in an age where such works are rarely appreciated by people. However, when it comes to something like business-to-business copywriting, there is always a business in need of a skilled writer. Believe me.

Anyway, whether you want to write fiction or write for businesses, it doesnt matter if you don’t know how to write well. That is why I am going to give you 3 simple steps to help you build a daily writing habit that you can actually stick to without hassle. Following these steps can make you an automatic writer and improve your writing skill immediately.

Back in the month of June this year. I started my own personal challenge to write and post a Twitter thread every day for 30 days. And yes, I did not write on some days, but I went through it till the end. Every day in the morning or evening, I sat down, set a countdown timer and quickly gathered my ideas, and posted them as a thread on Twitter. That meant I had to find writing ideas every day. I had to post whether I liked it or not. Truly, that exercise earned me some good followers, engagement, and genuine connections in the marketing and media world. But looking back, some of the pieces actually suck. Yet I am thankful for the entire exercise for making me a better writer overall.

Ok now.

What are the exercises to help you build a daily writing habit?

Dickie Bush is an American writing start-up founding partner. He is in the business of helping people build a daily writing habit. When he came out with a storm on Twitter back in 2021, I was there reading his ideas nearly every day. So I am going to borrow the ideas from him since they really helped me back then. They are helping hundreds of thousands around the world. And they can certainly help you too.

The first step to start building a daily writing habit is this. Find time to write.

Many beginner writers like to think that they can write anytime. Listen, my friend. It doesnt work like that or at least it’s gonna be quite harder especially if you want your writing to be productive and creative. How do you find time to write? Simplify your process by dedicating a specific time of the day to writing. I have told you about how I started with daily morning and evening journalling back in 2020. All I wanted was to write first in the morning and plan my day. And then wind down with another short journalling session. Truth is, if you don’t block time to write, you are going to lack clarity and may simply get too lazy and distracted and then abandon your writing along the way.

The second step is to find a way or a system to help you generate endless ideas. It is so damn simple and I am going to let you in on the secret recipe of doing that. And it’s this. Dickie taught me about the 2-year test. The 2-year test is where you look back at your life in two years. Ask yourself questions like:

  • What skills have you learned?

  • What struggles have you faced?

  • What hobbies have you picked?

  • What problems have you overcome?

  • What topics have you learned about?

Notice now how you have a lot of ideas to write about only that you are yet to unlock them. Now my friend, can you see how simple it is to generate ideas to write about?

The third and final step is to find accountability. You see, doing things alone can be difficult and as you know, we are social beings. We can only thrive when we come together. It helps a lot to find friends with the same dreams and hopes and goals as you. What you do then is start holding one another accountable by sharing work and goals. On a personal note, I joined some writing communities(online and offline) and started sharing my work with people. But before that, I was writing on a blog that only one of my friends knew about. What accountability does to you is it offers you feedback on how you write. And once you have that feedback, writing begins to feel easier for you.

Ok, my friend. That is it….

These three steps can give you the basics you need to build your daily writing habit and start writing online immediately. Let me repeat them. Find time to write. Make a way to help you generate endless writing ideas and find accountability by doing it with people.

As usual, if you are just starting, it is gonna suck. It’s gonna feel so hard. But embracing the suck is what really seasons you into a writer good enough to start your own writing business or look for writing jobs. Now please share this letter with someone you know might find it helpful.

As I wind down, I am now encouraging you to start teaching yourself more about writing. Because honestly, what I have given you is meant to build the habit. But there is the other parts like knowing how to write well and creating an impact using your written words, because that’s where there’s the enjoyment. Worry not my friend. We are going to learn more together in the future.
